Tick tock

Most synchronous digital systems have a master clock, and the Difference Engine is no different. This gear marks calculation cycles. The operator is facing it as the handle is cranked. You can see that only some parts of the gear have teeth. This is because there are different operations happening throughout a single calculation (or instruction) cycle, much as happens on modern computers.
